The goal
Arrange all 13 cards into valid sequences and sets, then declare. You need at least two sequences, and at least one must be pure.
Meld types
Pure sequence
3+ consecutive cards of one suit, no joker. Example: 5♥ 6♥ 7♥.
Impure sequence
A sequence completed using a joker. Example: 9♠ + joker + J♠.
Set
3–4 cards of the same rank with different suits. Example: Q♠ Q♥ Q♦.
Beginner strategy
Build the pure sequence first
Without it, jokers and other melds do not count. Keep any two connected same-suit cards.
Discard high unmatched cards early
If you are caught with unmatched cards, high cards cost the most points.
Watch the discard pile
Cards your opponents pick up show which suits and ranks they are building.
Use drop wisely
If your first draw gives a poor hand, an early drop (commonly 20 points) can be cheaper than a full loss.
Rummy formats
| Format | How it works | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Points rummy | One deal; winner takes points from others | Quick sessions |
| Pool rummy (101/201) | Players are eliminated at the score limit | Longer sessions |
| Deals rummy | Fixed number of deals; chips split by total | Planned sessions |

Usually a fixed penalty, commonly 80 points in points rummy.
Can I play rummy for free?
Yes — many apps have free-chip tables. We cover only virtual-chip play.
Is rummy legal in India?
Courts have treated rummy as a game of skill, but the 2025 Online Gaming Act restricts online money games. Our guide covers virtual-chip play only; see the Legal FAQ.
